How do I find a link someone sent me?
The fastest route is the chat's media overview. Tap the name of the person or group at the top, open the media area and switch to the links tab. Every link from that chat sits there in one column, without everything else in between. Most people do not know that tab exists.
If you roughly know what you are after, searching inside the single chat is quicker. And for things that already look important while you read them, there is the star. Between those three you catch almost everything.
The three routes that actually work
All four are official WhatsApp features. No trick, no third-party app needed.
The links area inside the chat
Open the chat, tap the name at the top, go to media and switch to the links tab. It is the only view that shows links without a wall of text around them.
Search within one chat
Instead of searching globally, search inside the chat. A fragment is usually enough: the district, part of the name, or simply “look at this.”
Star the message
Press and hold a message and star it. All starred messages then sit together in the settings. It only works if you remember in the moment you read it.
The chat with yourself
WhatsApp lets you message your own account. As a scratch pad that works pretty well, because there is nothing to dig through and nobody reads along.
Why you still will not find the link
The links area shows you links. It does not show you why. Forty blue lines, not one of them with a word about what it was or whether you ever agreed on anything. For plain web links without a nice preview, you often just get a domain and a string of numbers.
On top of that, chats are sorted chronologically rather than by topic. The suggestion from May and the reply from June sit 3,000 messages apart. The actual information, namely whether you are doing this or not, is written down nowhere. It happened in voice notes.
What belongs in a chat and what does not
Fits: anything for tonight
Spontaneous, one reply, done. That is what a chat is built for and it is unbeatably fast at it.
Does not fit: anything with lead time
The restaurant for next month, the trip in summer, the concert in autumn. By then the chat has moved on twenty topics.
Does not fit: anything several people decide
Three people, three suggestions, one thread. In the end everyone remembers a different state of play, and nobody is wrong.
Really does not fit: anything for next year
Anything you will need again in twelve months has no business in a chat. Old chats get deleted, phones get replaced, backups get forgotten.
The step that saves you next time
You do not need to tidy up your whole chat history. On the next good suggestion, one extra step is enough: tap the link, send it to Swiva from the share menu, skim the draft and add a line. “From Lea, needs a booking, she wants to go in autumn.”
