Google Maps saved lists missing? How to get your places back
You have been building a list of places you want to see for two years. Today Maps shows you an empty list. Breathe, it is usually less bad than it looks.
Why are my saved Google Maps lists gone?
In the vast majority of cases you are signed into a different Google account than the one you saved with. Saved places belong to the account, not to the phone and not to the app. Check which account is active at the top right and switch through every one that is signed in on the device.
After that, in order: a shared list that is no longer shared, a sync that is stuck on one device, and lists over the 3,000 entry limit. Google states itself that lists with more entries may not display properly.
First round: the four things it usually is
Before you reinstall anything, work through these four. It clears most cases in five minutes.
Wrong Google account
Personal, work, the old one from school. Tap your profile picture at the top right and go through all of them. If you signed in on a device with a different account, you are seeing that account's lists and not yours.
The app and the web show different things
If a list is there in the browser but not in the app, it is almost always a sync issue. Close the app completely and reopen it, or sign out and back in on the phone. Check in the browser first that the list genuinely still exists.
It was never your list
Other people's lists sit under “Lists you saved” but still belong to whoever created them. If that person deletes the list or stops sharing it, it disappears for you. You get the message that the list's creator either deleted it or stopped sharing it.
The list has grown too big
Google Maps limits saved lists to 3,000 entries. Above that the display can break, and that looks a lot like data loss. If your list is anywhere near that, split it up.
When a shared list stops opening
Sharing was turned off
When sharing a list, the creator chooses between view and edit access. If that gets rolled back or the link is invalidated, everyone else loses access. You have no backup of it.
The link got lost in a chat
Shared lists often exist only as a link in a chat history. Old chat gone, access gone. Save the list into Maps itself instead of relying on the link.
Editing was switched off
There is a setting that stops other people from editing the list. You can still see it but no longer add anything, and it feels like something is broken.
Everyone in the list is visible
Anyone who can view your list can also see the names and profile pictures of everyone else in it, plus who added which place and note. Worth knowing before you drop a link into a bigger group.
Saved does not mean planned
The real problem with Maps lists shows up afterwards though. You have 140 pins in “Vienna,” and when you want to do something on Saturday the map helps you exactly zero. A pin does not say why you dropped it, whether you need to book, whether it works for three people, or whether it only works when the sun is out.
That context is what is missing. So it pays to move the places you genuinely still want to visit into a list where one line of notes belongs to each of them and everyone can weigh in. What Swiva cannot do here

Google offers no reliable restore for that. If the creator deleted the list, it is gone for everyone. That is why a copy in a second place is worth it for lists that matter.

What does the message about the list's creator deleting it or stopping sharing mean?
Exactly that: the list belonged to someone else and was either deleted or is no longer shared. You cannot get it back yourself, you would have to ask that person for a new link.
Are my saved places private?
Only you can find your saved places unless you create and share a list. Once you share, everyone with access sees the places, the notes and who added what.
How do I plan with friends out of a Maps list?
Take the places that are actually on the cards and put them in a shared list with a short note each. Then on Saturday you are not scrolling 140 pins, only the ten you genuinely mean.
