YouTube Watch Later missing or empty? Here is why
“I will watch it later.” Later has turned into three years and 2,300 videos. And suddenly the list only shows 50 of them.
Why has my Watch Later playlist disappeared?
Usually it is not gone, just moved. In the app you find it in the “You” tab at the bottom right, under Playlists. On a computer, use the menu on the left or the Playlists area of your channel.
If it is there but looks empty or only shows part of the list: exactly that bug hit in summer 2026. Videos partly vanished or the playlist claimed it did not exist. YouTube said it fixed this at the end of August 2026. Update the app if yours is still acting up.
The most common causes
The playlist moved
It used to sit in the Library. Today it lives in the “You” tab under Playlists. If you look for “Library,” you will not find it.
The button is hidden on desktop
Since March 2026, YouTube on desktop no longer shows a Watch Later button directly on thumbnails on the home page. You now find the option in the video's three dot menu.
The list is full
YouTube playlists are capped at 5,000 videos and Watch Later is no exception. According to many reports, YouTube still confirms the save at that point, but the video never lands in the list.
Wrong account or channel
If you have several Google accounts or a second channel, each one has its own list. Tap your profile picture at the top right and check who is active.
Videos were deleted or made private
They then stay as “video unavailable” or get hidden. That looks as if the list has shrunk.
Clearing it out so things fit again
Remove watched videos
Inside the Watch Later playlist, the three dot menu offers to remove watched videos. For many people that alone frees up hundreds of slots.
Sort and start from the bottom
Depending on the device you can sort by date added. The oldest videos are usually the ones you will never watch anyway.
Move things into your own playlists
Cooking videos into “Cooking,” documentary tips into “Doc nights.” Your own playlists are for what should stay. Watch Later is a holding area.
Later is not a time
Watch Later works as long as it is about tonight. As soon as it becomes “someday,” the list turns into a graveyard. That is not a flaw in you, that is just how these lists work.
What helps is an occasion. The documentary for the next rainy Sunday, the workout video for Monday, the film for the evening with Leo. When a video is really an activity, it fits better in a list where it sits next to other ideas for exactly that occasion. How do I remove all watched videos at once?
Open the playlist, tap the three dots and choose the option to remove watched videos. YouTube offers no “delete everything” for the whole list.
