How to leave, delete or clean up a shared Instagram collection
The shared collection with your ex is still called “Our trips.” You want out. Quietly, if possible.
How do I leave a shared collection on Instagram?
A shared collection always belongs to a chat. There is no separate leave button for it: according to Instagram, whoever leaves the chat or gets removed from it also loses access to that conversation's shared collection.
Deleting is the blunter option. Anyone who can see the collection may delete it, no matter who created it, and everyone in the chat gets a message about it. So the quiet route is leaving, not deleting.
What you can do and what happens next
Leave the chat
In a group chat, tap the chat name at the top and leave the group. That takes the collection away too, for you. Everyone else keeps it exactly as it is.
Remove someone from the group
Whoever is removed from the group chat also loses access to the collection. There is no member list just for the collection, the group is the member list.
Delete the collection
Anyone with access can do it. The collection is then gone for the whole group and the chat gets a notice. The posts themselves stay on Instagram, only the collection disappears.
Take out single posts
Everyone with access can add posts and remove them again. If only three things bother you, that is often the calmer fix than deleting the lot.
The one to one chat is the catch
If the collection hangs off a one to one chat, you cannot just walk out and leave the rest behind, because there are only two of you. Your options then are: take posts out, delete the collection or delete the chat. Deleting the chat on your side is not the same as deleting the collection, and how Instagram handles that in detail tends to shift with updates.
Honestly: if you just want peace, remove the two or three posts that bother you and rename the collection. It is less final and nobody gets a message saying something was deleted.
What most people do not know
There is no going back to private
According to Instagram, a shared collection cannot be switched back to private once it exists. If you want to keep it for yourself, create a new private one.
New people see old collections
Anyone added to an existing group chat also sees the collections that chat already has. Before you add your coworkers to the holiday group, it is worth a quick look.
Posts from private accounts
If someone saves a post from a private account into the collection, only people who follow that account can see it. For everyone else the collection looks patchy.
Deleted means gone everywhere
If the person who posted something deletes it, it disappears from your shared collection too. Nobody in the group can do anything about that.
Before you delete: rescue what you still want
Save it privately
Save the posts you want to keep into a private collection first. That one is only yours and hangs off no chat.
Only take the good stuff
Out of fifty saves, usually five are still genuinely interesting. Those are enough. Let the rest go without guilt.
Keep planning somewhere else
If this was really about shared plans and not about Instagram, share those few posts into a Swiva list. There you can invite people or take them out whenever you like, with no chat attached.
What Swiva cannot do here
Swiva cannot leave or delete an Instagram collection and cannot see your collections at all. It does not connect to your Instagram account. You share individual posts through the normal share menu, that is it.
A few quick answers
Will anyone notice if I leave a shared collection?
You are really leaving the chat, and the others in the group see that like any other leave. There is no separate notice just for the collection.
Who can delete a shared collection?
Anyone who can see it, regardless of who created it. Everyone in the chat is notified.
Can I make a shared collection private again?
No. According to Instagram, a shared collection cannot be changed to private after it was created. Create a new private collection and save what you want to keep there.
Can I add someone later?
For a collection in a group chat, yes: anyone added to the group also sees the collections that chat already has. A one to one chat does not offer that route.
What happens to the posts when the collection is deleted?
The posts stay on Instagram with the people who posted them. Only your shared collection is gone. Anything you also saved privately stays with you.
Your next good idea gets to stay.
Save it to Swiva and come back to it when you actually have time for it.
