How to share an Instagram collection with friends
You have been collecting cafés in one collection for months. Now you want your best friend to see it too. Instagram politely says: nope.
Can I share an Instagram collection with friends?
Yes, but only if you set it up as a collaborative collection from the start. Open your saved posts, tap the plus, name the collection, switch it to collaborative and pick a person or a group chat. After that everyone in it can add posts and take them out again.
What does not work: turning an existing private collection into a collaborative one later. Instagram also has no option to add someone to a collection that already exists. You would have to create a new collaborative collection and re-save every post into it. That is where most people give up.
How to set up a collaborative collection
Open your saved posts
Profile, menu at the top right, then Saved. This runs entirely in the app. The flow does not exist on a computer.
Start a new collection
Tap the plus and give it a name you will both understand. “Vienna cafés” works better later than “inspo.”
Switch it to collaborative
The collaborative toggle sits right inside that creation dialog. Skip it here and you do not get it back.
Pick a person or group chat
The collection hangs off a DM thread. Whoever is in that chat is in the collection. Handy, and also the reason for most of the trouble later.
Save posts into it
From now on you can pick this collection when you save a post or a Reel. Everyone sees what gets added, and everyone can remove things again.
The one thing that will annoy you later
The toggle only exists at creation time. There is no way in Instagram to open up a private collection afterwards or add someone to it. So if you have been collecting restaurants for a year and now want to share that collection, it means creating a new one and re-saving every single post.
With twelve posts that is annoying. With two hundred, nobody does it. And because the collection hangs off a DM thread, it is not especially durable either. If someone leaves the chat or the thread gets deleted, their access goes with it. It is a feature for spontaneous things between two people, not for a list meant to last three years.
When the shared collection does not show up
The DM thread was left or deleted
This is the classic one, because the collection hangs off that exact chat. No chat, no access. Anyone who wants back in has to be invited again.
You are looking on a computer
Collaborative collections do not exist on the web. On a laptop you see your regular saves but not the shared area.
Wrong account
The invite went to your personal account and you are looking from your second one. Collections belong to the account, not the device.
The invite was never opened
The invite arrives as a message in the chat. If it drowned between memes, the collection effectively does not exist for that person.
The post itself is gone
A few blank tiles do not mean the collection is broken. A post that was deleted or made private disappears from a shared collection too.
When a list outside Instagram is simply easier
Instagram collections are perfectly fine. There are just a few points where they simply stop working.
When there are more than two of you
As soon as a third person joins or someone changes, the DM thread becomes the bottleneck. A list you can invite people to at any time saves you the whole circus.
When ideas come from more than one app
A Reel, a TikTok, a place from Maps and a screenshot all belong together in your head. An Instagram collection holds exactly one of those types.
When you eventually want to choose
A collection shows you what you collected. It does not help with the question of what you are actually doing on Saturday. For that you need something you can vote on or swipe through.
When the collection already exists
You do not have to migrate everything. Take the ten things you genuinely still want to do, share them to Swiva and leave the rest in Instagram.
What Swiva cannot do here

No. The collaborative toggle only appears when you create a new collection. For an existing one you have to create a new collaborative collection and save the posts into it again.

Can other people see my regular saved posts?
No, your regular saves are private. Only in a collaborative collection can invited people see what is inside.
Why can I not see the shared collection on my laptop?
Because it does not exist there. The entire collaborative collections flow lives in the Instagram app.
What happens if someone leaves the chat?
That person loses access to the shared collection. The collection itself stays for everyone else.
